Theology Proper / Paterology: Introduction
So, over the past several months, we have discussed the theology of the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ. Now, it’s time to turn our attention to the big guy. That’s right . . . God the Father.
The study of God the Father is called Theology Proper, or Paterology, from the Greek meaning, Father and Word. But why bother to study God the Father? In all honesty, many people seek to remain ignorant of a theological understanding of God the Father because they are afraid of what they will find. To many, the image of Father God is one of a big, mean, bearded deity, sitting in the clouds and waiting for us to sin so that he can finally hit us with those lightning bolts he’s been just dying to use on us. But is that view appropriate? In our next 4-month series, we aim to find out. As such, we will be discussing what our views of God the Father are, and how they match up to proper Biblical exegesis.
What does scripture reveal to us about Father God?
How have we distorted that view?
What did the early Church Fathers say in regards to Theology Proper?
So . . . Who is God the Father?
Join us the First Friday of next month to begin that journey. Or better yet, start it right now on our forum discussion boards (PubTalk).
